In 1968, when Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution caused violent upheaval in China, Clara Chan and her four children found themselves left nearly destitute in a portion of the large house in Guangdong province that
had been their family home. Her husband, a comic actor with an opera company, was taken to a
concentration camp.
